My family is from a small village in the Far North close to Tunguska River. Time lapsed into anabiosis here as if it had frozen, yet changes trickle in, while preserving the key traditions of hunting, fishing, and living in isolation.
Neck of the woods.
My Country., Jury Honorable Mention
Bear hunter is a professional occupation in some regions of Northern Russia. Nikolai is one of them. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, he used to work in a local hunting farm whereas now he is a boiler fireman.
Romantics think that the inhabitants of the Far North ride exclusively on husky-driven sleds. This is not quite the case; the civilization has reached even those areas where low temperatures fall below minus fifty Celsius. And this is the best vehicle to drive on snow and off-roads — the hardy Russian snowmobile Buran.
This is little Denis. He attends a local school together with another 15 children. Denis loves winter and dreams of joining his father on a hunting expedition during vacations.
A paw of an insomniac bear is a trophy. Old or wounded bears often become insomniac since they cannot get enough food in the taiga and come into the village for fodder.
Horses are at large in winter, and they use their own hooves to find food. The owners catch the herds when autumn is near so as to ship supplies for the hunting season.
The population of the village is some 100 people, and they certainly have a few hooch stills. The cooperative shop was closed a couple of years ago, and only one local shop is open. Nevertheless, traditional preferences in alcohol keep their way, and the homemade product is of higher quality.
Electricity is available here only 14 hours a day. Once an insomniac bear came into the village. It ate the dogs and was breaking into this house through the windows. The residents of the house spent that night on the rooftop. They managed to kill the animal after the dawn.
A boy plays with a black grouse in an old house which is used as a greenhouse in summer.
Many residents have hereditary hunting grounds. These are Baron and Gypsy. They are true wolf-hounds and helpers ready to set out on a 70 km long trail to work.
This is one of the tributaries of Tunguska. Time lapsed into anabiosis here, as if it had frozen, yet changes trickle in, while preserving the key traditions of hunting, fishing, and living in isolation.
