Vitaly Smolyanets in a wheelchair at a circus in Kursk. He had both of his legs amputated above the knees. His prosthetist admitted that Vitaly’s case is very complicated. Rehabilitation will take a long time, and not all patients with similar challenges are able to walk again. But Vitaly set himself the goal of making it back to the circus arena the same year.
Vitaly has been training animals for more than a decade. He started his circus career first as a carrier and then mastered animal training entirely on his own.
Vitaly’s wife, his friends and fellow artists all support him.
The artificial limbs bought in Germany cost 6 million roubles. Close friends, the circus and other artists helped to raise the money. Vitaly does not need his stick and crutches to walk short distances on smooth surfaces but he will always be needing at least one stick to walk.

Getting ready for the performance.
Vitaly’s first performance after his comeback to the circus took place in Rostov. His show lasted for 40 minutes, bringing
the audience to their feet for a standing ovation at the end.

Vitaly had to introduce changes to his program, by taking off stunts that he is not able to perform anymore. Vitaly performs with six lionesses, one tigress and one tiger. During the shows and rehearsals a special protective cage screens off the circus arena.
After a performance that went down well with the audience.

Vitaly Smolyanets is a well-known Russian tiger and lion tamer. He works at the Russian State Circus. In February 2015 he lost both his legs while rescuing the life of a stranger in a car accident.
